UNDERSTANDING YOUR TREATMENT
How does it work?
Tattoo ink sits in the dermis - the layer beneath your skin’s surface. Much of this pigment stays trapped within skin cells, which is why a tattoo does not simply wash away or disappear as your skin renews.
Nd laser treatment uses very short pulses of light to break this pigment into smaller fragments, helping your body gradually clear it from the treated area.
The ink absorbs the light. Laser energy passes into the skin and is absorbed by pigment that responds to the selected wavelength.
The pigment breaks into smaller pieces. Rapid heating and expansion create pressure waves that help fragment the ink. The short pulses limit heat spreading into surrounding tissue.
Your immune system gets to work. Specialist immune cells called macrophages collect the smaller ink fragments, beginning your body’s natural clearance process.
Your tattoo gradually fades. Over the following weeks, fragmented pigment is progressively cleared from the treated skin, allowing further fading between appointments.
What happens during and after the treatment?

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Complete removal is possible for some tattoos, but every tattoo responds differently. The ink used, its colour and depth, and your individual response to treatment all influence the outcome. Some tattoos clear well, while others may leave traces of pigment or a faint outline.
At your consultation, we’ll assess your tattoo and discuss what may realistically be achievable. Whether you’re hoping for full removal or simply exploring your options, you’ll receive honest guidance before deciding to begin.
-
Your treatment plan will be individual to you. Professional tattoos may need around 10–12 sessions, sometimes more, while some simpler tattoos need fewer. This is a guide rather than a promise of complete removal.
The number of treatments depends on factors such as:
The colours and amount of ink present.
How deeply the ink sits within your skin.
Your tattoo’s location and any existing scarring.
Your skin characteristics and response to treatment.
During your consultation, we’ll discuss an estimated treatment range and timescale. We’ll review your progress throughout your course, so your plan reflects how your tattoo is actually responding.
-
Laser tattoo removal can be uncomfortable, often described as a quick, hot snapping sensation against the skin. How it feels varies depending on the treatment area and your sensitivity.
It’s completely natural to feel nervous, especially before your first appointment. We’ll explain what to expect and discuss suitable ways to manage discomfort before treatment begins.
Your consultation is the ideal time to talk through any worries, including questions about numbing products and whether they would be appropriate for you.
-
Downtime varies depending on the size and location of your tattoo and how your skin responds. The treated area may feel tender, warm or appear red and slightly swollen while it settles. We’ll explain what to expect and any temporary activity restrictions before treatment, so you feel prepared. You’ll receive personalised aftercare advice, including how to keep the area clean and protected, what to avoid and when to return to exercise, swimming and heat treatments. If you have any concerns as your skin heals, we’re here to offer guidance and support.
-
Yes - laser treatment can be used to lighten a tattoo as well as work towards removal. If you’re planning a cover-up, full clearance may not be necessary.
Tell us about your plans at your consultation. The amount of fading needed will depend on your existing tattoo and what your tattoo artist needs for the new design. We can discuss a treatment goal around this, with time for the skin to heal before any new tattooing. -
Prices start from £69 per session, with your final price confirmed at consultation after we’ve assessed your tattoo’s size and treatment requirements.
Package options are also available to reduce the cost per session. We’ll talk you through your options and estimated treatment needs, so you can choose what’s right for you.
